By Carl Dew, Maaken Founder.
As I step back from my role at Maaken to embrace retirement, I find myself reflecting on a journey that began over thirty years ago. It has been a path marked by passion, growth, challenges, and a deep commitment to innovation in the construction industry.
From humble beginnings
In the late 1980s, my wife Leanne and I saw an opportunity to make a meaningful impact in the residential building market. Together, we founded Maaken with the aim of introducing new solutions to the construction industry through the potential of AAC panel technology (Autoclaved Aerated Concrete). A relatively unknown material in Queensland at the time, we knew it could transform how homes in Australia could be built.
A lasting impact on the construction industry
Our impact wasn’t just about building structures but transforming an industry resistant to change. When we started introducing AAC to potential clients, we weren’t just offering a new product – we were challenging decades of traditional construction thinking.
The legacy from my time at Maaken isn’t through the buildings we’ve constructed, but the mindset we’ve helped create, that construction can be smarter, more sustainable, and more adaptable.
By focusing on process, integration, and digital transformation, we’ve shown volume builders a different pathway. We’ve demonstrated that efficiency, quality, and innovation can coexist.
As I step back, I see our team continuing to push those boundaries, proving that true innovation is about continuous evolution, not just technological advancement.
A Culture of Innovation
We’ve always believed that integration, automation, and a willingness to learn are the keys to progress. Our culture at Maaken has been about seeing potential where others see barriers. Whether it was developing custom machinery, exploring what AAC could do, or investing in digital transformation, we’ve consistently pushed beyond traditional boundaries. The real innovation isn’t in the tools, but in the willingness to reimagine how we approach construction, collaborate with our ecosystem, and continuously adapt.
Growth and challenges
When we started, we saw potential in AAC technology that others couldn’t, and we were willing to do the hard yards. We visited every hardware store, met every architect, and challenged traditional construction methods. Our early days were about grit and determination. We weren’t just selling a product; we were creating a new way of thinking about construction.
Each project – from the first AAC panel high-rise to the development of the Noosa Springs golf and spa resort, was about proving that there was a more efficient approach to building. Our transition from a trade-based business to a service-oriented operation wasn’t just a strategy; it was a fundamental reimagining of how construction companies could operate.
Over time, Maaken grew into a trusted partner for builders across Queensland, completing over a thousand projects annually. Our work ranges from residential developments to large-scale commercial properties, all built on the foundation of quality and innovation.
The future of Maaken
Although I am stepping down from my role at Maaken, I know my vision of innovation, high quality, and exceptional service will continue to drive Maaken forward. As the company steps into a new era, embracing the incoming leadership of Alysha Dew and Jake Green, will ensure that Maaken maintains a fresh perspective that stays ahead of incoming sector trends and challenges, and will see the company flourish in the years to come.
